Chroma Monkey

ChromaMonkey is a mini-program crafted for Guizhou tourism, allowing travelers to check in at scenic spots and unlock unique accessories for a cartoon monkey character. With engaging gameplay and interactive challenges, ChromaMonkey transforms every visit into a delightful adventure, rewarding users when all collectibles are gathered.

Project Background and Challenges

The client aimed to leverage gamification to encourage tourists to visit and check in at various scenic spots across Guizhou—enhancing each site’s appeal by allowing users to collect unique props and engage in spontaneous turn-based battles. At the same time, the project required the seamless integration of the rich cultural elements and distinctive features of local ethnic minorities into the design. However, with limited visual space and some original materials lacking aesthetic appeal, striking a balance between refinement and local authenticity proved challenging. Moreover, the client’s request to transform the virtual character into a tangible collectible figurine pushed the project into a new arena that spanned both digital interactivity and physical product design—an entirely fresh challenge for our team.

Creative Concept and Design Process

Confronted with multifaceted and evolving requirements, our team embarked on extensive cultural research and resource gathering to extract the elements that best represented the local identity. To enhance the interface’s visual appeal, we conducted multiple rounds of sketching and style explorations for the “Chroma Monkey” character. The character’s modeling and animation were designed not only to be dynamic and engaging but also to incorporate regional cultural nuances, ensuring that every movement told a story of local heritage. Throughout the process, we adopted an iterative workflow—from initial concept to mid-stage feedback and final refinement—emphasizing effective communication and cross-disciplinary collaboration at every step.

Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration and Technical Implementation

What makes this project particularly compelling is that it transcends a typical application—it represents a novel fusion of disciplines. Traditional tourism promotion and digital entertainment are seamlessly integrated here: during the check-in process, users engage in battles with randomly appearing monsters to collect prop fragments, which ultimately culminate in the generation of a digital collectible. Underpinning this engaging experience are our breakthroughs in UI design, animation effects, and blockchain technology integration. To ensure the authenticity and uniqueness of each digital collectible, every Chroma Monkey character is embedded with a unique owner identifier and blockchain address, rendering it a tradable and collectible digital asset. At the same time, we explored innovative ways to transform these digital achievements into physical figurines, effectively bridging the gap between the virtual and the real.

Fusion of Digital Collectibles and Tangible Figurines

ChromaMonkey is more than a simple check-in application—it represents an innovative experiment in user engagement and the generation of digital assets. We conducted in-depth research on the digital collectible market and integrated physical product design to create a unique “collect, exchange, and tangible reward” ecosystem for users. By continuously refining the character poster, the Chroma Monkey’s image is finalized once users have gathered all the necessary props, with the system generating a unique digital address that establishes dual collectible value in both digital and physical realms. This innovative design not only meets the client’s goal of increasing visitor traffic to scenic spots but also offers a fresh perspective on cultural dissemination and the celebration of local uniqueness.
